Dunch announcement being made
Heads up, casino gaming fans! The most-awaited announcement has been made. Well, at least for those who have been waiting to know who will make up the Bermuda Casino Gaming Commission.
Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell was the one who made the announcement of the first three members.
Making up three of the five-member commission are Alan Dunch as the commission chairman, Garry Madeiros for the deputy chairman position, and another one is Dennis Tucker. Dunch is an experienced lawyer and the director responsible for the litigation practice group of MJM Ltd. With over 35 years of legal practice under his belt, he has developed specialized skills and expertise in the areas of labour and employment disputes, telecommunications and regulatory law, planning law, hospitality law, corporate and commercial litigation and insurance litigation.
Madeiros, on the other hand, is the retired(2007) President & Chief Executive Officer of BELCO Holdings Limited (now known as Ascendant Group limited), Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited and Bermuda Gas & Utility Limited. He had worked at BELCO for twenty-two years and the last 14 years as Presidentand CEO. What’s more, he’s a Chartered Accountant and has served on a large number of corporate, community and Government boards and is presently the Chairman of the Sustainable Development Round Table.
Tucker, the last of the three, is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Hotel Pension Trust Fund. Prior to that he served as the Vice-President and Managing Director of Sonesta International Hotels Corporation and spent 27 years with the Sonesta Hotel and he also served as a Common Councilor and Alderman for the Corporation of Hamilton from 2009-2012.
The remaining two members – one of which will be a former gaming commissioner from overseas – will be announced soon.
Now the newly formed commission will be tasked with not only regulating the casino gaming industry on the island, but will also determine who will receive a casino license. They will also be granted the authority to approve the layout of a casino, gaming equipment and hand out licences for key casino employees.
The three members are of course honored to be appointed in their positions. But will they be able to meet the expectations by the industry? Let’s hope so.
